Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index

The Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index (NFCI) is a measure of overall financial conditions in the US economy. The NFCI is a weighted average of 105 measures of financial activity. It is constructed to have an average value of zero and a standard deviation of one over a sample period extending back to 1971. Positive values of the NFCI indicate financial conditions that are tighter than average, while negative values indicate financial conditions that are looser than average. This indicator is made and updated by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Video by Benjamin Cowen.
